To good to be true

Well there seems to be some confusion about Prestonsburg’s wireless internet access. Apparently this whole thing has just been a “test” phase and that the lovely town of P-burg may not even keep the wireless access because of the cost. They have also been reports that the wireless access is not all the great (slow speeds, disconnects). The service was setup by Meraki Inc. One interesting thing is under there cities/towns Prestonsburg is the only one listed. The Prestonsburg City council may decide to scrap the entire project because the amount to maintain a service would be over $ 80,000 a year, wonder who would take a hit on that? Seriously did they not investigate the cost to maintain a wireless network? Like contact other cities that all ready offer this service and see what it actually costs to maintain, or did they just take the word of Meraki ? Who did the installation for 10% less of a typical install. Ever heard the saying you get what you pay for?

I seem to hear the flushing sound of $8,500 down the toilet. If the city of Prestonsburg wanted to stand out to become a more tech savoy community, to lure new business’s in my opinion the future is fiber, not dsl, not cable, and definitely not satellite. Sure having wireless access for the city is a nice perk, but would I move to a city just because they have it? Huh hell no! Wireless access should be provided by local business’s to lure customers in..like if I’m not mistaken doesn’t Wendy’s offer free access? Or how about Pcc if they don’t already, or Charlie’s beside Food city. Now if I was moving and had the choice between to houses in 2 different locations and one had fiber available I would definitely choose that house with no doubt. Did you know that right now in certain areas you can get a fiber connection (offered by Verizon) 5Mpbs download with 2 Mpbs upload for $42.99 or 15Mpbs download & 2Mpbs upload for $52.99 or the most insane speed 15Mpbs download & 15 Mpbs upload for $64.99. Currently with Bellsouth/AT&T I am paying $47.95 for a 6Mpbs download & 384kb upload ( I typically get around 3Mpbs download). Plus High definition video is also supported. You can’t put perfume on a terd, you need to upgrade the infrastructure and the rest will follow.

Prestonsburg Ky now a wireless city!

East ky News No Comments »

I have to say I actually surprised at this, but as of Thursday March 20th Prestonsburg Ky is now a wireless city. Free internet access is available at Archer Park, Stone crest and in downtown Prestonsburg.

Free wifi

They are only a few other select cities that offer free wifi internet. I may just have to get a new laptop battery and test out the service at archer park while my little girl plays. No info is currently available in the area of speeds or reliability.

Martin County Sheriff Owes $3000

East ky News No Comments »

Well apparently the martin county sheriff decided on how to spend the funds allocated to the department himself. Maybe he’s like Bush and does not understand what a budget is?

Sheriffbadge

He apparently spent the funds on anti-drug merchandise ( pencils, shirts, and other things) instead of anti-drug education. The only thing that really erks me is that in the budget overage is bank late fees and conference fees for spouses employees. How in the world does a sheriff department write bad checks? And what the hell is a “conference fee” for employee’s spouses?
