4 day school week

East ky News, Rant & Raves No Comments »

With the price of fuel soaring and no end in sight there has been some reports that the school systems in Floyd, Pike and Letcher County may go to a 4 day school week. Jenkins Independent schools has had a 4 day school week for 3 years already and there reports are that it’s a success, faculty and student attendance are up.

Now if I was back in school I would absolutely love this, having Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off woo hoo!! But unfortunately I’m not and having my little one starting school in the fall I find myself opposing the 4 day school week for a few reasons.

  • With the extra day off what are school kids to do? It seems they are already bored. Just ask any teenager what is there to do around here and I’ll bet there response will be nothing or getting into mischief.
  • An extra weekday off that means a lot of parents are going to have to find daycare, another expense for the parents.
  • Are they not reports that find that the longer students are away from school the less information is retained? And going an extra hour or so a day in my opinion is not enough. That comes to about 10 to 15 min extra each class.
  • I’m sure some of the faculty members love the idea of a 4 day school week. But I can guess one that does not. How about the school bus drivers that are paid by the hour? By going to a 4 day school week you just cut their paycheck by 20%, how would you like to get cut 20% on your check?

To me there has to be other methods/ideas that need to be explored before a 4 day school week is implemented.

Is there anybody that don’t remember the days of getting hacked DSS cards? Remember the H card , the HU card? As we all know those days are long gone ( unless your using fta), but I just read a very interesting article about one of the top hackers that worked for NDS.

Free stuff on the Web

Good Deals & Free Stuff No Comments »

It’s seems since the beginning of the internet one hot topic that has always been around is free stuff. Whether it is free money, free electronics, or even free magazine subscriptions. Probably the easiest to come by is free magazine subscriptions or heavily discounted ones. I currently have 5 different magazine subscriptions that I probably paid in total around $5 for, and each magazine subscription is anywhere from 2-4 years long, not to bad in my book. Some of my favorite freebies include free Mach 3 turbo razors, coupons for free dog & cat food, and well just about anything, we all love free stuff!

My highest valued free items (currently) are a free IPod and about $500 in cash; I’ll get into that later.
Did you know that you can right now go to Walmart.com and get free trial size samples? Now the good free stuff like Mach 3 razors and coupons for free Iams pet food is few and far between, so you have to be on top of your freebie game. Here are a couple of excellent web site dedicated to getting great deals on the internet and free stuff. First Slickdeals.net, this site is updated daily with all the latest deals that are available on the net. It has a nice easy on the eyes layout and friendly forums. Second is Spoofee.com, once again this site is updated several times daily and has a nice layout. I highly recommend bookmarking these sites and checking them daily for great deals and freebies.

The only drawback to these sites, is rebates are used for a lot of their “slickdeals”, now myself I am not a big fan on mail in rebates especially now with the internet available, why snail mail?
When there is an item I know I going to purchase in the near future I always keep my eye on these two sites to see if I can get a better deal, and most of the time I do!
