Wifi @ McDonald's is free if you have their DSL service.
"AT&T Wi-Fi Basic service is FREE and already included if you subscribe to AT&T High Speed Internet, AT&T U-verseSM or AT&T FastAccess® DSL with a speed of 1.5 Mbps or higher. No ordering required! Simply use your AT&T high-speed Internet membership ID and password at any AT&T Wi-Fi Basic hot spot."

For an update on the wireless network in Prestonsburg, just give Brent Graden a call at 606-886-2335 (City Hall).

But for those of you who want an update, here goes: The system is doing fine. We have fielded over 125 call from across the nation from Los Angeles to Manhattan to Ohio. We have even had 7 site visits with people bringing their airplanes in at the airport. As of 8/1/08, we have had 4016 unique users on the system with 723 GB downloaded. We have also gotten some extra funding for the next fiscal year and we plan on filling in the back areas inside the downtown plus tackling the constant problem of Stonecrest Mountain not getting the correct service it is due. I look forward to tackling that issue.

Also, we just got the good word that I will be able to receive free training for web site development. i will be working in conjunction with the Commonwealth to develop a great interactive website. It will be the official website of the city and it will be a great place online to pay your bills, look up meeting minutes, ordinances, etc ... overall it will be a great communications tool and make city government more transparent. That is why I never mind dropping my name here. Again, if you have any questions or comments, please drop me a line a brentgraden@hotmail.com. I'm here for you.

As far as the McDonald's WIFI goes, I have tried to use it, but it is only for AT&T customers. You pay for the service and you pay for the devices that are WIFI enabled. You need to purchase a data plan to receive it. Usually a minimum of $20 per month in addition to your calling plan. I think it would be safe to say that Appalachian Wireless can not log in at McDonalds. Wendy's Restaurants just recently went true wireless for free. Their service is slow at first, but by the time you are half-done with your sandwich, you are cruising along nicely.

Keep up the blog. It is good to get the information out.

Sincerely,

Brent

Almost everybody out there is talking about the new hi def(flat screen) tv's, and how good they look, But do you realize that if you put it on a ordinary tv stand, that can be a danger to your small children. They tend to get excited and hit tv's, flat screens can fall over and cause serous engery to small children, in some cases death. thats why for safty reasons you should always secure your tv to the wall, best advice is to mount it on the wall and conceal all the wires in the wall. You can do this yourself, But should leave it to the professionals,If you spend a little time looking around you can usally find a contractor in area that will do a good job for reasonable fee. Though you should be prepared to spend several hundred dollars, you will need hd wire (8 to 12ft min.)a wallmount and an electricial out ( if you do not want to see power cord )Shop around for HDMI and Component cables you don't need the $139.00 priced HDMI cable but at the same time the $39.00 cable will not give you the picture quality you are looking for. look in the range of $69.00 to $99.00 for 12ft HDMI cable,at that price it will give you quaity pic and will take a pretty good lickin, If you have any Q's you can goto (www.flatscreentvinstallsky.com)we can answer all you Q's
thank you

Duly noted. Thanks for the response.

What I envision for a new web site for the city is this:
* Be able to monitor resolution and ordinances and meeting notes for the last three years and going forward.
* Be able to look up all KRS law or some link.
* Be able to pay city bills on-line (taxes ... I will ask, but the utilities commission is a separate unit)(p.s. we accept credit cards now)
* have web cams so you can view downtown.
* welcome to prestonsburg package complete with videos.
* etc ...

I like the way pikeville set theirs up. Also, ConnectKentucky liked what we have done with our wireless internet and said that they will help with our design and layout of a web site. i am trying to do it myself, so it is great to get help. Currently, we have prestonsburg.net and cityofprestonsburg.net. The latter is a site that is for posting back taxes only, but it has helped reclaim over $11,000 for the city for future projects.

If you know me you know that I like to do constructive things that produce tangible results so any help is appreciated. Conversations like this are good because it usually means that something will happen at the end of the conversation. However, if a lot of conversation goes on and nothing happens then that is when I get concerned. I want nothing but the best for this city. This is my adopted home from Chicago and I will raise my 4 kids here. Might as well work hard and make it the best you can and make a difference.

Maybe I come off to abrasive? But I was actually congratulating P-burg for the award. Also issue's and problem areas cannot be resolved if they are not confronted, ignoring them will not make them go away. When I read the article and it stated that a new government website was being considered or whatever the first thing that popped in my mind was I still can't pay my water bill online or search for county employment opportunities, so why a new "government" website?

I not sure if prestonsburg.net is in between a upgrade or what but the website is useless as I type this (ok I see the "under construction" now lol) and has been that way for awhile now.

And who am I? It's really not relevant.

Thanks for taking the time to comment on the topics.

Ouch. I think if I handed you a bar of gold I think you would find something wrong with it.

We need to pull together and see what can be done. If we stop commenting on what is wrong and try to do something about our future, then we just might get something done.

By the way, who is the author of this article?

Just had to comment on this article ...

Sure it is a test phase but the system is working very well. The coverage is about two linear miles sand cost about $8500. The only interference that we have ben encountering is metal roofs, wireless cameras, pine needles, and think stone buildings. We take in all calls, log them, and find solutions. About $5200 was spent on product, $2600 was spent on DSL 3.0 and the rest on signage and advertising. If you are referring to the $80000 price tag that was brought up by Shag Branham and is not true. We will be asking for $4000 in the next budget for slight additional product plus the upkeep for the DSL service. In 16 weeks, we have experienced over 3000 unique users now and over 320GB downloaded. I have personally experienced 6 MB/PS download speed. That is not bad. I believe that this test is a success and I believe that it should be voted forward. We need to have a vision of what our city's future should look like ... and this is part of it.

And please, don't talk potty talk on this site ... it's not intelligent.
